Om Birla Elected as Lok Sabha Speaker

Om Birla has been elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Protem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab declared him the winner by voice vote. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi escorted the new Speaker to the chair.

Before this, Prime Minister Modi had proposed his name. The Prime Minister said, “Om Birla’s experience will benefit the country.” Rahul Gandhi said, “I trust that you will not suppress the voice of the opposition.”

It is noteworthy that Congress had demanded the post of Deputy Speaker, and upon not receiving a response, the opposition fielded their own candidate for the Speaker’s position.

Om Birla is the first BJP leader to become Speaker for the second time. Previously, Congress’s Balram Jakhar served as Speaker for two consecutive terms.
